Olympic Torch - My thoughts
Olympic Torch - My thoughts
O.k., I have to admit that I just don't understand the people who are protesting and trying to disrupt the torch's progress. I'm am saddened that these people can apparently not separate a sporting event that brings the world together and gives us all something to cheer about from politics.
I'm divided on whether or not China was an appropriate choice to hold the Olympics. I would think that the committee members who awarded the Games to China are well aware of the country's human rights record and the controversy the decision would generate. I would like to think that these matters were given grave consideration. In the end, the honor was bestowed upon China, for better or for worse.
So, now, there are lots of people who are upset. I heard on the radio this morning that, following the protests which met the torch in Paris, the Olympic committee was concerned enough that they are considering canceling the rest of its trans-world journey.
Here's my question: If the torch's journey is halted, what will the protesters have gained? The Olympics will still go on. And, they are still going to be held in China. Your cause will be not be furthered. Your actions will simply have marred the Games, not China.
That's just my opinion.
